What to Plant in April: A Regional Guide

April is the sweet spot for spring planting—but what thrives this month depends heavily on where you live. Whether you're in a chilly northern zone or already feeling summer heat in the south, here's what to plant right now based on your USDA Hardiness Zone.

Zones 3–4 (Colder Climates)

Average Last Frost: Late May to early June
April is still early, but you can get a head start with cold-hardy crops.

What to plant:

  • Indoors: Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant (start seeds now)
  • Outdoors (with protection): Spinach, kale, onions, peas, radishes, carrots

Tip: Use cold frames or row covers to extend your planting window.

Zones 5–6 (Cool-Temperate)

Average Last Frost: Late April to mid-May
You're on the edge of full planting season. Cool crops go directly in the ground now.

What to plant:

  • Direct sow: Lettuce, beets, carrots, Swiss chard, broccoli, peas
  • Start indoors: Tomatoes, cucumbers, melons

Tip: Harden off indoor seedlings before transplanting to prevent shock.

Zones 7–8 (Mild Winters)

Average Last Frost: Late March to early April
Your garden should already be underway. Time to fill it out.

What to plant:

  • Direct sow: Beans, squash, cucumbers, corn, okra
  • Transplant: Tomatoes, peppers, eggplant

Tip: Mulch early to lock in moisture and prevent weeds.

Zones 9–10 (Warm Climates)

Average Last Frost: Already past
You're well into spring—think heat-lovers.

What to plant:

  • Direct sow or transplant: Sweet potatoes, melons, corn, okra, eggplant, basil

Tip: Water in the morning to reduce disease pressure and beat the heat.

Zones 11–13 (Tropical/Subtropical)

No Frost Risk
These zones are more about timing the rainy and dry seasons.

What to plant:

  • Year-round: Herbs, greens, beans
  • Now: Hot-weather crops like sweet potatoes, okra, tropical fruits

Tip: Choose short-season varieties to avoid pest buildup in warm weather.

Final Thoughts

April is one of the most active months in the garden, but it’s not one-size-fits-all. Know your zone, check your local frost dates, and use this month to get ahead. A few weeks now can mean a massive harvest later.
